Broken timing chain

Have a 1.6 petrol note that is about 10 yes old.timing chain has gone.is the engine cam safe.if so can chain be replaced without removing engine.

I'm not sure if the engine is safe once the chain has gone and chances are the pistons have hit the valves
I would turn the crank so that the pistons are midway down the bores (remove plugs to check this is the case) and then I would turn the cam(s) cautiously to ensure there is free movement.
If not possible on any of these actions then chances are it has lunched the engine
