Switched the ignition on and the front windscreen wipers decided to shift all the snow off the windows (I'd left it on 'Auto' mode)- the wipers subsequently took up a vertical position and no longer work.

Additional info:

Wipers locked up in the vertical position (started operating after physically pulling/ pushing the wipers... then stopped again (repeated a few times before locking up again))

Motor not hot (40  degrees f)

Front washer ok (as is rear wiper/ washer)

As far as I can understand the relay is in the 'Engine fuse box' and marked 'j', but I'm not sure what or where the fuse is.

So can anyone please help me locate the appropriate 'relay' and 'fuse' ?

I am also a bit confused as to the two electrical boxes under the bonnet near the battery.... If I have understood correctly the 'engine fuse box' is nearest the front (and has two fuses in it), while the IPDM is nearer the firewall (and contains lots of fuses)

I would greatly appreciate any help you can offer - as we are without transport  until I fix it.

Many thanks,

Dave

If the motor moves when you aid it by physically moving the wiper arms then there is power going to it.

More than likely the linkage has detached which is a common fault on these cars.....try reconnecting the linkage (quite easy to get to)
Alternatively the wiper arms have moved on the tapered connection to the arms from the linkage but you would need to remove these to get to the linkage and the motor

Thanks for that Trevor.

I have now stripped it all down to basics and confirmed that: there is definitely full voltage on some of the connector pins, that the linkages are moving nicely (a touch of oil helped)  and the motor is not interested in doing anything (not even with the linkages disconnected).

I have now ordered a motor which I should get by Sunday....

I will let you know how it goes.

Many thanks,

Dave

P.S. I also read that the wiper relay is soldered into the IPDM and not removable- although the 'plug- in' relays can be bought off ebay...  Go figure.
