Timing chain?

Hello!

I have recently bought a k12 micra for my first car. There are a few issues with it obviously being a 16 year old car but one sticks out more than the others. 

When I specifically start the car from cold there is a rattling noise coming from the drivers side of the engine. 

I was going to carry out an oil service myself because I dont know when it was last done and the oil doesn't look great. I mean that its mostly black but there is still a bit of a goldy brown colour. 

I understand cars make noises but its just been really playing on my mind because i could not afford to do a timing chain or a new engine if something were to go wrong. 

The reg number is Bv58 dkd if you need engine sizes/ codes etc

I would advise changing the engine oil and filter as soon as possible.
Having looked up your cars registration on Eurocarparts, it is listed as having a timing chain

Try to locate a quality oil filter and get the best oil you can for the money - Castrol, etc
